Review of The Selection by Kiera Cass

Back Cover Blurb: For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined. (TAKEN FROM AMAZON)

BASIC PLOT LINE:  The story starts by showing us a very stubborn, but very much in love teenage girl. Her family is very poor and in the future dystopian setting the story is set in, love has little influence in marriage unless the person in question is the same caste. A caste is a level of classification the new royal set up not only after the USA fell, but also the country that took over after that. There were eight castes. Eights were the lowest of the low and ones were the royal family. America Singer and her family were fives. The artists were fives. The castes did not have a choice in professional fields, if you were a five, you were an artist. Lucky for America, she loved music.

Unlucky for America, her boyfriend and love of her life, Aspen, was a six. Marrying down was NOT acceptable for a girl. America’s family struggles to get by, just like many other fives. So when the castle sends out a notice that they are looking for a new princess and the families of the girls who get picked to audition for the “role” get a weekly stipend, America’s mother encouraged her to apply. Much to her surprise, so did her boyfriend. Biggest surprise of all, she gets picked right after she and Aspen had a huge fight and broke up.

Moving into the castle puts America on the offensive and after an encounter with the prince, she expected to be thrown out the next day. To her surprise, Prince Maxon did the opposite. He talks to her, asks her why she is there, and with her limited response, they become friends. Of course, friendship slowly builds into more just as Aspen finds a way back into her life.

How long it took to read: I read this in one day.

Characters: America is stubborn and honest and down to earth. She is someone who I would want to be BFFs with for ever and ever. Aspen, the early love interest, is well intentioned, but an ass for how he treated America. Prince Maxon, is perfect. Ya know for the handsome and sweet and charming prince, it is kind of expected. But I don’t care how expected, he makes my heart melt. And all the other contestants? There are some nice ones and some not so nice ones, which leads to some interesting  drama.

Take it or leave it: Take it! But be aware that this is the first in a series and the second book does not come out for a few more months. I for one cannot wait for book two!
